Hot take: that burnt pot at my sister's place in Boise was 100% the grinder, not the beans
So I'm at my sister's apartment in Boise over the weekend and she hands me this bag of fancy single origin beans she paid $22 for at some little shop downtown. She grinds them in this blade grinder she got as a wedding gift and the pot comes out tasting like burnt rubber and cardboard. She's about to toss the whole bag thinking the beans are bad. I dumped the grounds out on a paper towel and it was dust on one side and whole chunks on the other, like gravel mixed with flour. I ran the same beans through my burr grinder at home the next morning and it was a totally different cup, sweet and smooth with none of that burnt taste. The blade thing just smacks the beans randomly so you get a mess of sizes, and the tiny dust bits over extract into bitter junk while the big chunks barely give up anything. If your coffee suddenly tastes bad after you change beans, check your grind before you blame the roast. Has anyone else rescued a bag of expensive beans from a blade grinder disaster, and did you just toss it or try to make it work?
