Just realized my $18 drip machine makes better coffee than my old $200 one, and it took a move to figure it out
Three years back I was all about my fancy burr grinder and pour over setup, weighing beans to the gram every single morning. When I moved into a tiny apartment in Austin with no counter space, I shoved a cheap Mr. Coffee in the corner and figured I'd hate it. Turns out the thing that actually mattered was grinding fresh and using water just off boil, not the gear. Now I do a quick bloom and slow pour with the same $18 machine and it beats what I was making before. Anyone else find that upgrading one small step did more than buying a whole new setup?
Did you always grind your beans right before brewing, or was that part of what changed too? I used to swear the machine was everything and would drop cash on whatever had the best reviews, but now I get that fresh grounds and hot water do most of the heavy lifting. My cheap setup makes a solid cup now that I stopped blaming the gear.
