My $15 french press splurge turned into a total disaster last week

I figured I'd treat myself to a cheap french press from the discount store, paid like $15 for it. The plunger felt a little flimsy but I thought whatever, it's just for making coffee. First morning using it, I pushed down and the glass shattered everywhere. Hot coffee and grounds went all over my counter, took me 20 minutes to clean up the mess. I had to throw out the whole thing and go back to my old plastic pourover cone I got for $8. Now I'm wondering if I should just save up for a proper Bodum or if there's a decent steele one under $30 that won't explode on me. Has anyone else had a cheap press blow up on them like that?

French presses are fragile, so I switched to a steel one and never looked back.
