My French press grind size discovery after 5 years of muddy coffee
Last week I finally figured out why my French press coffee always had that gritty sludge at the bottom. I was using a store-bought pre-ground that was way too fine, so I grabbed a $15 hand grinder and went coarse, like sea salt. The difference was huge, no mud, cleaner cup, and it brewed in about 4 minutes flat. Anyone else made the switch and noticed the same thing, or am I late to this party?

Five years of muddy coffee and you just now figured this out? I would have thrown the whole press out the window after month two. That gritty sludge was basically drinking sand with a side of caffeine. I remember my first coarse grind, I thought the grinder was broken because the pieces looked like gravel. It brewed clean and I actually tasted the beans instead of just bitterness. Four minutes flat is about right too, any longer and you're back to over-extraction city. Better late than never, I guess.
