Vent: the guy at the roaster counter said pre-ground coffee goes stale in 30 minutes, and I checked my own jar
I was standing in line at a little roaster here in Boise on Saturday and the guy behind the counter was chatting with a regular. He said once you grind beans, the good stuff starts fading in about 20 to 30 minutes, and honestly I almost rolled my eyes at first. Then he grabbed their grinder and tapped the grounds basket and said 'smell this, then smell the whole beans' and wow, they did not smell like the same coffee at all. I went home and opened my own pre-ground bag from the grocery store, one I'd had sitting in the cupboard for maybe 3 weeks, and it smelled like sawdust. Total cardboard. I felt so dumb because I'd been blaming my $25 drip maker for making weak coffee this whole time. It wasn't the machine. It was me buying big bags of ground stuff to save time and then wondering why my mornings tasted flat. If you're doing the same thing, grab a cheap burr grinder and just grind what you need for the day, it's a 30 second job. Has anyone here gone back to pre-ground after switching, and did you actually notice a difference or was it all in my head?
I read somewhere that coffee grounds lose like 60 percent of their smell compounds within a day, and light roast goes even faster than dark. My uncle swears by his old Folgers can, but he also drinks it with so much creamer that it could be anything in there. Taste is personal, but fresh ground hit different for me too.
