My fineliner exploded mid-sketch at a coffee shop in Denver last Thursday
I shoved it back in the cap without clicking it shut and got black ink all over my fingers and the notebook page, so now I always carry a backup pen in a ziploc bag, anyone else have a favorite pen that's worth the mess?

Honestly though, is a little ink on your fingers really that big of a deal? Sounds like you just need to slow down and click the cap on right instead of treating pens like grenades.

The Pilot G2 specifically is the worst offender for that, emmawood is right that some pens just have a design flaw where the ink pools at the tip even when stored properly. I switched to Uni-ball Signo 207 and haven't had a single ink-stained finger in six months.

My left index finger was stained for three straight days last week from a blue Pilot G2 that I swear just looked at me wrong. @stellaa69 have you actually tried scrubbing that stuff off with soap and hand sanitizer before a job interview? It's not about being dramatic, it's about looking unprofessional when the ink settles into your cuticles and refuses to budge. Some pens are genuinely defective and leak even when you treat them like expensive glass, not grenades. I'd rather just buy a pack of Paper Mate InkJoy and never deal with the smudge panic again.
