The Doodle I Drew While On Hold Changed How I Think About Sketching
I timed myself on a doodle during a 12 minute customer service call and it came out better than any of the hour long sketches I've tortured myself over. Anyone else find that rushing actually helps your lines stay loose?

A buddy of mine who works in an auto body shop tried this trick a few months back, @davis.ruby. He was stuck waiting for paint to dry and only had like 10 minutes before the boss came back, so he started sketching this old Mustang from memory. He said it came out raw and full of mistakes but he LOVED it way more than the polished stuff he usually does at home. That timer pressure really does free you up from that stupid perfectionist voice in your head, man.

That 12 minute doodle thing works for me too, something about the pressure keeps it from getting stiff.

Yeah the timer really does something to my brain too lol. I think we overthink stuff when we have unlimited time and then it just comes out all tight and overworked. I tried it with a charcoal pencil once and the 12 minute timer forced me to just go for it without erasing every two seconds. It actually turned out way looser and more alive than anything I'd spent hours on.
