Took me 2 hours to draw one hand holding a coffee cup, almost quit twice
Was doodling at my kitchen table last night and decided to sketch my left hand holding my mug. Sounds easy right? Except every thumb I drew looked like a fat banana and the fingers kept coming out like sausages. I erased the whole thing at least 8 times and my paper got so smudged I had to start a fresh page in my cheap Walmart sketchbook. Finally just traced the outline of my actual hand with a pencil and went from there, which felt like cheating but hey it worked. How do you all handle hands, do you use reference photos or just wing it every time?
Tracing your own hand isn't cheating, that's just using a live model and every art teacher I ever had told us to do exactly that. Winging it from memory is why your thumbs look like bananas, so grab a reference photo next time instead of fighting it for two hours.
