I finally gave in and tried the 'treat on the nose' trick with my stubborn beagle, and it actually worked.
After three weeks of him ignoring 'stay', I balanced a single piece of his favorite chicken jerky on his snout for a full 30 seconds before giving the release word, and now he holds the command perfectly every time, so what other weird training tricks have actually worked for you guys?

That "treat on the nose" trick is a classic, and I read about using a clicker for cats with similar surprising results.

My buddy's lab would not stop jumping on guests. He started turning his back and crossing his arms the second the dog's paws left the ground. Total silent treatment. Took about a week, but the dog finally got it and now just sits for pets.

Honestly the "treat on the nose" thing is just proof that dogs are basically furry little weirdos. My old dog would only listen if you whispered commands like you were sharing a secret. Full voice? Totally ignored. But whisper "sit" and he was all over it. They just make up their own rules.
