My cat broke my favorite mug and I actually thanked her for it

So yesterday morning my tabby Mochi knocked my big blue coffee mug off the counter and it shattered on the tile. I was mad for like two seconds but then I realized I'd been using that same cracked mug for three years just because it was a gift from my aunt. Now I got a new one from the thrift store in Portland for $2 and honestly my coffee tastes better. Has anyone else had a pet accidentally break something that needed replacing anyway?

Whoa, okay, slow down there. It's a mug, not a deep emotional breakthrough. You're acting like the cat performed an exorcism on your soul. Plenty of people keep cracked mugs or old gifts around because they actually like them, not because they're trapped in some guilt prison. It sounds like you were just ready for a new mug anyway and the cat gave you a convenient excuse. Not everything your pet destroys has to be a metaphor for personal growth, sometimes it's just a clumsy animal and a broken piece of ceramic.

Three years with a cracked mug just because your aunt gave it to you? Sounds like you were holding onto guilt, not a mug. My dog chewed up a pair of sandals I got from a cousin I don't even talk to anymore, and I told myself I'd been keeping them out of obligation. Honestly, a pet breaking something you already wanted to replace is just giving you permission to let go. You didn't need a cat to fix your coffee situation, you just needed to admit the mug was already dead weight. So yeah, I get thanking her, but maybe also thank yourself for finally ditching a gift that turned into a chore.
