My cat taught herself to open cabinet doors

My friend Jen told me last month I was crazy for baby proofing my kitchen cabinets. She said cats don't have thumbs, they can't figure it out. Well today I walked in and found my cat Lucy with her head stuck in the treat bag. She used her paw to hook the handle and pull. Now I have to install actual child locks on three cabinets. Has anyone else had a pet that figured out something way faster than you expected?

I read somewhere that cats learn by watching, so yours probably saw you open those doors a hundred times.

Hold up. A hundred times? That's insane. I don't think my cat has that kind of patience. She gives up after like two tries if the treat bag doesn't open.

Ryan said "cats learn by watching." I see it different. Cats learn by figuring out what works for them, not just copying us. Lucy probably spent weeks messing with that handle before she got it right. People give cats too much credit for being mindless copycats. They're problem solvers when food is involved.
