My cat tried to steal my sandwich and fell off the counter

I was eating lunch at the kitchen table today around 1pm. My cat Max was giving me that stare from the counter then he made a leap for my turkey sandwich. He totally misjudged the jump and landed right in the trash can instead. I couldn't stop laughing for a solid 5 minutes. Has anyone else's pet done something this clumsy lately?

Heard this from my friend Sarah the other day about her cat Mittens. Mittens tried to jump from the top of the fridge to the kitchen island to grab a stick of butter, but she slipped and slid all the way down the fridge door into a pile of dirty laundry. Sarah said Mittens just sat there looking at the ceiling like she was trying to figure out how to rewind time. The worst part is, Mittens went right back up on the counter ten minutes later and stared at that butter like nothing happened. Does your cat Max have a "dignity recovery time," or does he just pretend the trash can doesn't exist after a fall?

Did your cat just straight up eat the turkey sandwich out of the trash or was he too embarrassed to even touch it after that? In my experience, cats have this weird pride thing where they'll pretend the whole event never happened if they land somewhere gross. Max sounds like a character, but I'd be curious if he tried the same move later that day or if he's learned his lesson. Mine will fake amnesia about the trash can for a week and then pull the same stunt again.

That "fake amnesia" thing is so real. My cat Olive did the exact same move three days in a row trying to snag my leftover pizza crust. Landed in the recycling bin twice. She just sat there like nothing happened. Licked her paw. Acted offended when I fished her out. It's wild how they just reset after a total fail. Max probably already forgot about the trash can. He's plotting his next sandwich heist as we speak.
