My cat turned a simple cardboard box into a 45 minute standoff
I brought home a new cat tree today and left the empty box on the floor. My cat, Mochi, decided the box was his new fortress and refused to come out for dinner. I tried treats, toys, and even shaking his food bag. It took me 45 minutes of sitting quietly nearby before he finally poked his head out, looked at me, and went right back in. Has anyone else's pet gotten weirdly attached to packaging?

Remember reading that the box smell from the factory might be part of the draw (something about the glue, maybe). So it's not just about the box being a box, it's a whole sensory thing for them. That's why a new box is way more interesting than their old bed.

Oh, cardboard boxes are basically cat traps. My cat will ignore a hundred dollar bed for a week old Amazon box. It's like they have a secret meeting where they agree to do this to us. You just have to wait them out, they always win.
