My cat's 'stare' at the wall last month was actually a genius bug hunt
I was convinced he was just being weird, but after he caught a spider I didn't even know was there, I get it now. Anyone else's pet have a weird habit that turned out to be super useful?

My old beagle, Barney, would go stiff as a board and point his nose at the floor vent. I'd just laugh at him until the heating guy came and found a mouse nest in the ductwork (it explained the weird smell, too). Turns out he wasn't having a senior moment, he was giving us free pest inspection services. I guess we should have trusted the expert.

Genius bug hunt" is a perfect way to put it. My dog used to do this thing where she'd sniff one corner of the ceiling for ages. I thought she was just broken until a whole nest of stink bugs fell down from a crack up there.

That "free pest inspection services" line is spot on. I read an article a while back that said a lot of what we call pet quirks are just their senses working way better than ours. They hear the bugs in the walls or smell the mice we can't see. Makes you feel a bit silly for telling them to knock it off when they're just doing a job. My friend's dog kept pawing at the kitchen cabinet and they found a huge ant colony living behind it. We really should pay more attention.
