My dog changed my mind about crate training after 3 nights of howling

I swore up and down crates were cruel, but then I read a post from a vet tech explaining how dogs see them as a safe den, not a cage. Tried it with my rescue last Tuesday, gave her a kong stuffed with peanut butter inside, and she went in on her own by day 2. Now she naps in there with the door open, has anyone else had a stubborn pup flip like that?
