My dog taught me I was filling his food bowl all wrong

I always just dumped kibble on top of whatever was left in the bowl, and my golden retriever Charlie would pick around it. Then last Wednesday, my sister watched me do it and asked why I don't just empty the old crumbs first. I tried it that night and Charlie went straight for the bowl and ate everything in under 2 minutes. Has anyone else had a pet subtly hint they hate your feeding routine?

Jumped right into rinsing the bowl every other day after my cat started leaving half her food. I used to just pour new dry food on top of the old and she'd pick at it like it was a chore. One day I emptied the bowl completely, gave it a quick rinse with hot water, and put fresh food in. She cleaned the whole thing in one go. Now I do it every couple of days and she eats like clockwork. Guess they can taste the stale stuff left in there.

Crack up every time I think about how long I've been DUMPING stale crumbs on top of fresh food like a complete idiot. @ivan_mason you nailed it with the stale thing - my cat Mittens would literally sit and stare at me like "are you done contaminating my dinner?" I did the exact same thing, just rinsed the bowl one random Tuesday and she acted like I'd served her a Michelin star meal. Makes me wonder what other dumb stuff I do that my pets are silently judging me for.
