My vet asked why I check my dog's gums every morning, and now I feel like I've been missing something simple
My dog Daisy lets me lift her lip at 6:30am every day now without a fuss, mostly because she knows a treat follows. Has anyone else's vet told them to do this, or is mine just extra?
Checking gums every single day seems like total overkill to me. Gums change color for a hundred reasons, and half of them mean nothing at all, so you end up stressing over nothing. Plus pink one day and slightly pale the next could just be the lighting in your kitchen, not some hidden illness. If your dog is eating fine, acting normal, and has energy, that tells you way more than a lip lift at 6:30am ever will. Vets throw out little tips like this because it costs them nothing, but it turns owners into worried messes checking every little thing. Save the gum checks for when Daisy actually seems off, and trust your gut the rest of the time.
