Switched from a retractable leash to a flat one after yesterday's scare

My beagle nearly bolted into traffic on a busy street in Dayton when the retractable cord jammed, but the flat leash gave me instant control when I tested it at the park an hour later. The difference was night and day, the 16 foot cord felt like a gamble every second, while the 6 foot fixed one just feels solid. Anyone else ditch the retractable after a close call like that?

Flat leashes are definitely the safer choice in most situations, but saying the retractable cord "jammed" isn't quite the whole story. Those cords usually jam because the brake lock gets held down by accident or the mechanism gets dirt and grit in it, especially if you have a dog with long fur. A flat lead won't lock up like that, so your point still stands. The bigger fix is teaching a solid heel and recall, because no leash can stop a determined beagle from lunging once the tension snaps. Good on you for making the switch, but don't toss the retractable in the trash just yet. They work fine in empty fields or on trails where there's zero car traffic, just not on streets like that.
