Heard a cashier talk about how fast people give up on bagging their own stuff

Was at the self checkout at Target on 4th Street yesterday and this employee told another shopper he sees like 15 people a day just walk away mid-bagging. Left all their stuff sitting there for him to deal with. I get that the machines can be annoying but is it that hard to finish what you started? Has anyone else noticed how many people just bail on their groceries when the scanner acts up?

Is it possible those people had somewhere to be or were just having a really bad day? I mean, I've definitely noped out of a self checkout when it started yelling at me for an unexpected item and I had a bus to catch.

...and honestly so what? Like yeah it's annoying for the employee but is it really worth getting worked up over? People bail for all sorts of reasons, maybe they realized they forgot their wallet or the machine just glitched one too many times. It's a self checkout, not a contract with the store. The guy gets paid to stand there anyway, so dealing with a few abandoned bags is just part of the job. I'd rather someone walk away than stand there fuming and holding up the line for five minutes. Tbh the real problem is these machines break every other transaction, so it's a miracle more people don't just say forget it.
