Overheard a cashier at Aldi explaining why she hates self checkout...and it clicked for me

She was telling a customer that self checkout just pushes more work onto customers without cutting prices, and that the company saves money by having fewer employees on the clock. I used to think self checkout was convenient and modern, but now I see it as a way for stores to make us do their jobs for free. Has anyone else changed their mind about self checkout after hearing something like that?

See it from the store's side for a second. Self checkout lets them keep prices lower since they don't have to pay as many cashiers, and that savings does get passed on eventually. Plus you get out faster when you only have a few items instead of waiting in a long line for a full service lane.

Savings does get passed on eventually" - that's not really how it works. Stores pocket most of that extra profit, they don't lower prices. And self checkout isn't faster for anyone with more than like 3 items, you're just doing the cashier's job for free.
