The bakery receipt math that threw me for a loop

Stopped at a local bakery in Akron on my way to a service call last Wednesday. Picked up a loaf of sourdough and a coffee, total came to $11.50. I handed over a twenty and got back eight in bills plus fifty cents. Something felt off so I did the math in my head while standing there. The cash register had already printed the change, but I made him recount it anyway. Turns out I was right, he shorted me a dollar. He got all defensive and said the machine does the math, no way it's wrong. I asked him to just count it again slowly, and sure enough there was the extra buck sitting right in the drawer. Has anyone else caught a register error like that and had the employee argue with you about it? I always double check my change now, especially at busy spots where they're rushing.

He's probably right that the machine did the math, but that doesn't mean cash drawers can't be off from earlier mistakes or miscounted bills. You made him recount, found the dollar, and that's that, but making a scene over a buck at a busy bakery seems like a lot of energy for pocket change. I always glance at my change too, but I don't think I'd push it past a quick count unless the total was way off.
