Vent: My dad told me to just add more salt and I thought he was crazy

Last Tuesday I was making my grandma's chili recipe and it was super bland no matter what I did, so my dad said dump in a whole extra teaspoon of salt. I rolled my eyes but tried it anyway and it actually fixed the whole pot. Has anyone else had a family member give advice that sounded dumb but somehow worked perfectly?

@the_emery the sugar thing is real... my grandma used to put a tiny pinch of sugar in her pasta sauce and I thought she was nuts until I tried making it without and wondered why it tasted flat. Salt and sweetness just play off each other in ways I don't get but definitely can't ignore.

My dad did something similar with scrambled eggs, except he said to add a pinch of sugar. I thought he had lost his mind. I told him sugar belonged in cookies, not eggs. But he just shrugged and walked away, so I tried it anyway. To my surprise, it cut the bitterness and made the eggs fluffier somehow. Now I add a tiny bit of sugar every time and it works like magic. I still don't understand the science but I can't argue with the results.
