Finally got my fridge organized after 3 years of chaos
Ngl, I've been meaning to clear out my fridge since I moved into this apartment in Austin back in 2021. Last night I threw out 4 containers of mystery leftovers and actually wiped down every shelf. It only took like an hour but man, finding that jar of pickles I forgot about felt like a victory. Does anyone else let their fridge get that bad before finally fixing it?

I mean, daniel saying it took "three years to get chaotic" is a bit off from what I read. The person said they finally organized it after three years of chaos, not that it took three years to get that way. Maybe it was always a mess and they just hit their limit lol.

Friend of mine had a fridge that was basically a biohazard for like two years. He'd buy stuff, forget about it, buy more stuff. One day he opens the door and a jar of something fell out and shattered on the floor. He said the smell was so bad his roommate almost threw up. Took them a whole weekend to clean it all out and they found leftovers from a party they threw in 2019. He told me the only reason he finally did it was because the landlord was coming for an inspection. So yeah, sometimes people just need that one push to deal with the mess they've been ignoring for way too long.

Three years of just ignoring a fridge is wild but honestly I get it, once it gets bad enough you just don't want to open the door anymore. My roommate had a similar situation with our freezer, we found a bag of peas from 2017 that had turned into this weird fuzzy block. The whole cleaning process took like 5 hours because everything was frozen together and we had to chip it apart with a butter knife. Some people just need that landlord inspection or a broken jar to finally snap them out of the denial phase.

Oh man, I gotta push back on this a little. I get the satisfaction of cleaning something, sure, but a fridge taking three years to get chaotic? That sounds like a slow burn problem that could've been way easier to handle in small steps. I just do a quick tidy up every Sunday morning while my coffee brews, it takes maybe ten minutes tops. Throwing away mystery leftovers feels good but it also means you let those containers rot in there for months, which is honestly kind of gross. Not trying to ruin your victory or anything, but maybe set a reminder every week to just toss the old stuff before it becomes a science experiment.
