Heard a line at the coffee shop that stopped me cold

I was waiting for my order at Blue Bottle on 14th Street and this older guy tells his friend 'you don't get what you want, you get what you tolerate.' Like he just said it so casually but it hit me hard. Made me think about my own job situation, honestly. Anyone else ever hear something random that just stuck with you all day?

Oh man, that line is gold. I've been thinking about it ever since I read it honestly. What really helped me was actually writing down all the things I was tolerating at work and then asking myself if I'd let a friend put up with the same stuff. The answer was usually no, and that made it a lot easier to start making changes. Sometimes you just need to hear the truth from a stranger at a coffee shop to snap out of it.

I overheard a similar thing waiting in line at a hardware store about two years back. Some guy told his friend "a closed mouth gets no food" and I thought about it way too long while buying paint supplies. That coffee shop line is killer though, makes me wonder how many bad choices I've made just by being too comfortable with stuff. I once stayed at a job for five extra months because I tolerated a bad manager who always stole credit for my work. Now I joke that my tolerance level for nonsense is about as high as my skill at making pour over coffee, which is pretty low.
