Hot take: The old hardware store on Elm Street still beats the big box places

I stopped by Miller's Hardware yesterday to grab a single 3/8 inch washer for a leaky faucet. The old guy behind the counter didn't even scan it, just waved me off and said 'on the house.' I remember going there with my dad 20 years ago for stuff and it felt exactly the same, same wooden floors and creaky shelves. Felt good to support a place that's been around since the 80s and still remembers your name. Anybody else got a local shop they refuse to give up on?

Yeah, that "on the house" thing hit me. I had a similar thing happen at the old record shop downtown. Bought a scratched up vinyl for a buck and the owner tossed in a cleaning kit, just because. It's not even about saving money, right? It's that they know you're not just another transaction. Those big box stores train their staff to upsell you on a whole tool set when you just need a simple washer. Places like Miller's get that sometimes a washer is just a washer.

Right, that owner knows your name not your credit score.

Ha, joke's on me - I walked in for a lightbulb once and left with a new friendship and zero bulbs.
