Hot take: those expensive French press gadgets are a total waste compared to a simple metal mesh one
I got suckered into buying that fancy glass Bodum with the plunger that has like 4 different filters for $50 at that kitchen store downtown. Used it for 2 weeks and the glass cracked from just hot water, not even boiling. My friend laughed at me and handed me this beat up metal French press he got for $8 at a garage sale. The difference is wild - the metal one stays hot way longer and the coffee tastes cleaner somehow. Plus I've dropped it twice and it just dents a little, no shattering glass everywhere. The cheap one even has a coarser filter so less sludge at the bottom. Has anyone else dealt with overpriced coffee gear that just doesn't hold up?

Oh man that reminds me how we all get tricked into thinking fancy new stuff is better when the old simple stuff just works. It's like how everyone I know bought those expensive insulated water bottles but I still use the same dented metal thermos my dad gave me from the 80s that keeps ice cold for like 2 days. Something about companies convincing us we need all these upgrades when the basic version already did the job fine.

My buddy Matt bought into the hype on one of those temperature controlled electric kettles, the $100 kind that supposedly holds your perfect pour over temp. He swore by it for like a month until the heating element just gave out. Meanwhile I'm still using my $20 stovetop kettle that whistles like crazy and has a chip in the enamel from when I dropped it moving apartments. He ended up borrowing my kettle for a week while his was getting replaced under warranty and admitted the coffee tasted the same either way. The garage sale metal press absolutely sounds like the better bet, those old things are built like tanks and nobody's crying over a cracked glass carafe.
