My 3 dollar thrift store bread machine made the worst loaf I've ever tasted

I picked up a dusty Sunbeam bread machine at Goodwill for 3 bucks, and after 4 hours of kneading and baking, the bread came out so dense it could double as a doorstop. What did I do wrong - did I overmeasure the flour or is the machine just too old to heat right?

The first time I tried a thrift store bread machine it came with a mildewy instruction manual and a dried up raisin stuck to the inside lid. The bread turned out like a salty brick with a weird hollow thump when I tapped it. Ended up using it as a doorstop in the garage until the mice chewed through the power cord.

Bet that raisin had more kneading potential than the machine ever did.

Sounds like a pretty great doorstop to me.
