My old coffee grinder finally gave out after 7 years this morning, but I managed to fix it with a spare part from my toolbox.

I took the whole thing apart, found the worn plastic gear, and replaced it with a small metal washer that fit perfectly, saving me from buying a new one.

My old grinder broke last year and I just bought a new one. The time and hassle to fix it wasn't worth the forty bucks to me.

That plastic gear is always the first thing to go on those grinders. My old Cuisinart made it about five years before the same thing happened. Good call using a metal washer, that fix should last longer than the original part did. It feels way better to outsmart a broken appliance than to just replace it.

Yeah, outsmarting a broken appliance is the best feeling. When my gear went, I actually carved a new one from a block of hard nylon I had in the garage. Took an afternoon with a drill and some files, but it's still running years later. That little victory when it worked again was better than buying a whole new unit.

So you just keep random washers in your toolbox?
