My pile of dead leaves looked exactly the same for 3 months... until I stopped raking and just let them be
I've got this spot in the backyard under the oak tree where leaves pile up every fall. For months I'd rake it clean, but the next day more would drop and it'd look just as messy. Finally a neighbor walked over and told me to quit fighting it - just let the leaves sit and they'd break down on their own. Three weeks later the pile shrunk by half and the ground underneath was super dark and healthy looking. Anybody else ever waste time fighting nature instead of just letting it do its thing?

Honestly I did the same thing with my fire pit area last fall and the soil under those leaves is amazing now.

Yeah I saw something online about how mulching leaves in place is way better for your lawn than bagging them up. @hayes.joel that's awesome how it turned out for you, might have to try it next fall.

Did you find any spiders living in that leaf pile?
