Took me 3 hours to fix a bike chain that should've been 10 minutes

Was changing a flat on my commuter this morning and managed to drop the chain off the front ring. Simple fix right? Not for me. I spent 3 hours fighting with the derailleur, checking the cable tension, re-indexing gears, everything. Finally my neighbor came over and pointed out I had the chain routed wrong through the guide pulley. One minute to fix. Has anyone else had a dumb mechanical mistake that ate up a whole afternoon?

The chain routing through the guide pulley bit got me too, except it was my rear derailleur's cage on a mountain bike. I must have taken that thing apart and put it back together six times, adjusting the limit screws until I stripped one. Finally watched a YouTube video where the guy showed the chain should wrap around the little tab inside the cage first. Felt like a total idiot but at least now I double check that every time before I touch cable tension.
