Warning: I tried the 'no spray' approach on my lawn this spring and it backfired hard

Everyone in my neighborhood is always bragging about going chemical free on their yards. So this April I decided to skip the weed and feed treatment I usually put down. I figured my grass was thick enough to crowd out the dandelions and clover on its own. By mid May my yard looked like a wildflower meadow, but not in a good way. The clover took over about 60 percent of the front lawn and the dandelions went to seed before I even got a chance to pull them. My neighbor actually asked if I was trying to start a hay farm. I learned that going natural takes a lot more planning than just not spraying. You have to overseed in the fall and manually dig out weeds every week. Has anyone else tried a low chemical yard plan and actually gotten it to work without the whole lawn turning into a weed patch?
