Caught a grocery store manager marking down meat at 6am

I was at the Safeway on 82nd Ave last Tuesday picking up a few things before my route started. Saw a manager with a roll of yellow stickers hitting the meat section, so I hung back and watched. He was marking down ribeyes and pork chops by 40% just because the sell-by date was the next day. I grabbed 4 packs of ribeyes for like $28 total, normally that would be over $50. Has anyone else figured out when their local stores do the markdowns?

Man that's a solid score... the 82nd Safeway is on my route sometimes but I never catch them out that early. I swear the markdowns happen when you least expect it, like they're hiding from regular folks. Good on you for hanging back and watching, most people would just grab their stuff and leave.

Is it just me or do the stock boys probably know exactly what they're doing when they wait till the last possible second to roll out the markdown cart? They probably get a kick out of watching us regulars scramble around like we're hunting for buried treasure. I swear I've seen the same guy at my store fake restocking just to see who's really paying attention. But yeah, you're right about watching the process, most people grab and go without ever learning the little tricks that save you money.
