Found out my grocery store marks up pantry staples 40% on the end caps

I overheard a stocker mention that the high-traffic aisle ends are where they make the biggest margins. Anyone else check the regular shelves before grabbing stuff from those displays?

I just started grabbing stuff from the middle shelves last month and saved like 5 bucks.

Wait, hold on. You only saved 5 bucks from a whole MONTH of middle shelf shopping? That can't be right unless you're getting deals on stuff you don't normally buy. Man, I'd be PISSED if that was my total savings, middle shelf items are supposed to be way cheaper than the name brand top shelf stuff. Maybe you're grabbing fancy middle shelf items that aren't much different in price, check the unit prices next time because that 5 dollars sounds like you're not changing your shopping habits enough. If I only saw five bucks after a month I'd be questioning my whole grocery strategy.

William, you only saved 5 bucks in a whole month? That sounds off to me too. I mean, 40% markup on end caps is huge, so grabbing the regular shelf version of just a few items like pasta or canned tomatoes should save more than that. Were you only buying one or two items from the middle shelf, or did you switch your whole list over? Because if you're still grabbing the end cap stuff for most things, no wonder the savings are tiny. You gotta look at unit prices too, like jesse_green55 said, because sometimes the middle shelf brands sneak in fancy packaging that costs almost as much. I'd be curious to know how many items you actually swapped out.
