I started buying marked-down bakery items at closing time

My local grocery store in Cincinnati marks bakery stuff 50% off about an hour before close, so I grabbed a bag of croissants for $2.50 last Thursday. They were actually still soft the next morning, which I didn't expect since I always figured day-old pastry would be dry. Has anyone else had luck with the clearance bakery section or is it just hit or miss?

Jump right in and check your grocery's discount meat section too while you're at it. We get those pre-made stuffed peppers and meatloaves marked down half off after eight o'clock, and they freeze beautifully for nights when I don't want to cook. The bakery clearance is definitely a steal though, especially if you grab their day-old sourdough loaves and turn them into croutons or bread pudding. I've actually started planning my shopping trips around the markdown times now because it saves us about twenty bucks a week without much effort. You just have to eat it within a day or two, but that's never been a problem in our house with how much my husband loves those cheap pastries.

Man, you hit on something real there. I grab those day-old bags of cinnamon rolls from my Kroger all the time, three bucks for a six pack that would normally cost double. Toss them in the microwave for fifteen seconds the next morning and they taste like they just came out of the oven. It's kind of a cheat code if you ask me, why pay full price when the store is practically giving away perfectly good stuff?
