Last Friday at the grocery store I got 3 cartons of eggs for 99 cents each

Turns out they were set to expire the next day and the manager was just trying to clear them out. I froze two cartons and used one for breakfast - they were totally fine. Has anyone else had luck asking about near-expiration markdowns at your local store?

Oh wow that's EXACTLY how I score deals at my local market! I asked the meat guy once if they ever mark down stuff and he pointed me to a cart near the back with packs of chicken that were like a day from expiration. Got a family pack for like 60 percent off and just threw it in the freezer that night. The trick is asking when they do their markdowns because my store does them around 7 AM right after the truck comes. I've also noticed they slap those yellow clearance stickers on bread and bakery items on the same day every week. You just gotta be polite and chat with the workers a bit they'll tell you the secrets if you're nice about it.

Respectfully, I see it different. Getting up at 7 AM to chase meat discounts sounds like a part-time job more than a money saving strategy. The time and effort spent learning each store's schedule and building rapport with workers just to save a few bucks on chicken doesn't really add up for me.
