Price match at a big box store caught me off guard with a 40 dollar refund

So last week I bought a coffee maker at a chain store for 89 bucks, then two days later I saw the exact same one in a weekly ad from a different store for 49. I was grumbling about the difference when a guy in line told me the first store has a price match policy if I just bring the ad in. I shrugged and tried it, fully expecting some eye roll and a no. Instead, the cashier scanned the ad, handed me 40 back in cash, and even apologized for the hassle. Has anyone else gotten a surprise refund this way, or do most stores quietly hide that policy on purpose?
