Pro tip: the lady at Aldi showed me how to cut my produce bill by $12 a week
I was standing in the produce aisle last Tuesday staring at a $4 bag of bell peppers when this older woman next to me just laughed and grabbed a loose one for 79 cents. She told me Aldi prices their loose peppers by the pound not the bag, so you can grab exactly what you need and save half. I started doing that along with buying the 3 lb onion sack instead of singles and my weekly total dropped by $12 easy. Now I just weigh out my own mushrooms and tomatoes too and skip the pre-boxed stuff. Anyone else got a trick like that from a stranger at the grocery store?

Oh come on, that $4 bag of peppers is usually 5 or 6 peppers and the loose ones are smaller. So you're paying 79 cents for one tiny pepper versus 80 cents each for bigger ones in the bag. The onion sack thing is fair but I've weighed those loose peppers next to bagged ones and the math doesn't always work out in your favor. Aldi is smart they set those prices specifically to make you think you're saving when you're really not.

The 79 cent peppers are usually the ones that are starting to go soft too. I've grabbed a bag of the loose ones before and half of them were wrinkled by the next day. Meanwhile the bagged ones hold up for a week in the fridge. Aldi definitely figured out that people see a low per-item price and grab them without thinking about how fast they'll use them. The real trick is knowing which produce you actually need to last and which you're cooking that night.
