Unpopular opinion: the "family size" packages at Costco are actually a scam for singles
I bought a 5-pound bag of shredded cheese two weeks ago for $11, and by day 5, half of it was already moldy in my fridge. For a single person living alone in an apartment in Chicago, that math just doesn't work out. You end up throwing away more than you save unless you freeze everything or eat the same thing for 10 days straight. Has anyone else crunched the numbers on this and realized you lose money on bulk?

Don't you think the real issue is that fridges in small apartments have terrible airflow? I lived in a studio in Lincoln Park and my fridge was so cramped that the cheese at the back would freeze solid while the front turned green in days. Costco's bulk deals assume you have a big fridge with good circulation and maybe a freezer chest. For singles in city apartments, half the "savings" get eaten by spoilage before you even open the bag. I started splitting big packs with a neighbor down the hall and that actually worked way better than trying to freeze everything.

Oh man @jessica841 that's not quite right. The cheese at the front spoils from the door opening, not airflow.
