Choosing between a $1,200 used scan tool and a $250 bluetooth dongle for a 2016 Duramax
Last month a customer brought in a 2016 Duramax with a random misfire that only showed up when the engine was cold, and I had to decide between a used Snap-on Solus at $1,200 or a $250 bluetooth dongle with a subscription app. I picked the dongle to save cash and told myself the live data would be enough, but two days in the cylinder balance readings were lagging so bad I was chasing the wrong injector. The truck left my bay running worse than when it came in, and the customer brought it back on a Thursday wanting answers, which cost me a full day of comeback work. The shop owner in Brighton finally let me borrow his Solus, and the misfire showed up on cylinder 5 in about ten minutes, right where I should have looked first. I am not saying cheap tools never work, but on common rail stuff you need the sample rate to actually trust what you are seeing. Has anyone here made a cheap scanner work on a cold misfire, or do you just eat the cost up front?
