Finally figured out injector timing on a 6.7 Cummins at a shop in Omaha
I had this 2015 Ram that was running rough for weeks and I kept chasing the wrong codes. Turned out the injection pump was off by 2 degrees after a replacement job someone else did. Has anyone else had luck dialing in timing with just a scan tool or do you still pull the gear cover?

Used to think you could dial it in close enough with a scan tool and call it good... but then I had a 6.7 that would set off the knock sensor no matter what I tried with the scanner. Ended up pulling the gear cover and found the dowel pin was wallowed out just a hair. Setting it with a dial indicator sorted it right out. Never trust just the numbers on a screen after that.

@wendyk56 Man I used to be the same way. Had a 5.9 that was running rough and the scanner kept telling me it was a bad injector. Replaced three of them before I finally checked timing with a dial indicator. Turned out the cam gear was off by 2 degrees from the factory. Felt like a fool for trusting the scan tool over the old school method. Now I always start with the dial indicator on any diesel that has weird symptoms. It catches stuff the computer never will.

Wait, a 2 degree cam gear offset from the factory?!
