Saw a 6.0 Powerstroke with a homemade coolant filter setup at the Truckee River rest stop

I was grabbing coffee at the stop off I-80 and a guy had his hood up on an old F-550. He'd made a coolant filter from a big Baldwin spin-on housing and some heater hose, said it's saved him two head gaskets in the last 100,000 miles. He just drills a small hole in the thermostat housing to tap into it. Has anyone else tried a DIY filter like that, or is a kit just easier?

How big of a hole are we talking in the thermostat housing? That's the part that sketches me out. I've seen guys run a tee off the heater core line instead, it's less risky than drilling into cast aluminum. A kit is cleaner but costs four times as much as some hose and a filter base from the farm store.

Yeah, the heater hose tee is the way I went too, mostly because I didn't want to mess with drilling. Like cole356 said, it does get hot there, so I used good hose and kept the filter away from the exhaust. I ran that setup for years and it caught a ton of junk. A kit is definitely easier for a clean look, but if you're okay with some hose clamps and figuring out a mount, the homemade way works just fine and saves a lot of cash.

Honestly, drilling the housing is fine if you go slow and use a sharp bit. I've done the tee off the heater hose too, but the filter can get pretty hot there.
