Spent a whole weekend chasing a coolant leak on a 6.7 Powerstroke that turned out to be a bad cap

I had this truck in my bay in Omaha, and the owner was sure it was a head gasket. I pressure tested it, checked the oil cooler, the whole deal. After about 12 hours of work over two days, my buddy walks by, grabs the degas bottle cap off my bench, and says 'This thing feels light.' Swapped in a new Motorcraft cap, and the leak stopped. Has anyone else ever been sent on a wild goose chase by something that simple?

Always start with the cheap and easy stuff, even if the customer is convinced it's major.
