Truck quit on I-80 outside Cheyenne, the shop foreman there told me to check my fuel filter first, now I do it every time
Two winters back I was hauling a load of pipe east on I-80 and the rig started losing power about 30 miles outside Cheyenne. Limped it into a shop off the exit and the foreman came out, listened for maybe 10 seconds, and asked when I last changed the fuel filter. I told him it was maybe 15,000 miles ago and he just laughed.
Turns out I had a bad tank of fuel with some water in it and the filter was full of gunk. He showed me the old one and it looked like it was coated in coffee grounds. Cost me $80 for the filter and a half hour of shop time instead of the $1,200 injection job I was sure I was looking at.
Now I pull my filter every oil change and drain a little off the bottom just to see. Takes two minutes. Anybody else got a cheap check like that they do on the regular? I feel like I dodged a way bigger bill that day.
