Talking to my friend Jenna about her art style made me rethink my own color choices

She said 'you keep using that same blue from the tutorial palette' and I realized after 4 years I'd been copying someone else's mood instead of finding my own, has anyone else had a friend point out something obvious about your work that you never noticed?

Spent three whole years using the same brush before someone told me it was for calligraphy, not painting.

bennett.vera that calligraphy brush thing is hilarious because I bet you were out there making some weirdly beautiful accidents without even knowing it. That blue comment hit me right in the gut though. For me it was my friend pointing out that every painting I did had the same tiny crooked tree in the corner. I thought I was being consistent, she called it my security blanket tree. Now I go out of my way to paint forests or nothing at all, and honestly my work looks way less stiff.
