Pro tip: ignore that guy who said duplicate files don't matter

My buddy Mark told me last year that having a few copies of the same photo on my drive was no big deal. I finally ran a duplicate cleaner last weekend and it freed up 47GB I didn't even realize I was hoarding. Anyone else get bad storage advice from someone they trusted?

Mark telling you duplicates don't matter is like a mechanic saying dirty oil is fine. Ran a cleaner on my own drive and found 14 copies of the same tax receipt from 2019 scattered across different folders. That's not even counting the 30GB of duplicate music files from when I synced my phone wrong.

Starts with how we treat digital clutter the same way we treat physical junk drawers. You know the one, where you throw in random receipts, old keys, and that one charging cable nobody recognizes. People keep buying bigger houses for stuff they never touch, and bigger hard drives for files they never open. It's not just duplicates either, it's the whole mindset of thinking more space solves the problem instead of just cleaning up. Same reason my neighbor rents a storage unit for holiday decorations he only uses twice a year. We'd rather pay for room to ignore the mess than take an afternoon to sort through it.
