Spent a whole Saturday just cleaning up duplicate photos on my phone

I had over 8,000 pictures on my iPhone and figured it would take an hour tops to delete the obvious duplicates from screenshots and burst shots. Three hours later I was still sorting through March 2022 trying to figure out which blurry sunset photo to keep. Has anyone found a tool that actually works well for this without making you pay a monthly fee?

The search bar trick is basically a trap, it shows you everything except what you actually wanted. I swear these phone companies make deleting duplicates hard on purpose so we all just give up and buy more cloud storage. At this point my photo library is basically a museum of 47 blurry photos of the same bird on the same fence from 2021. If there was a magical app that could tell the difference between "valuable floor photo" and "actual garbage" I would pay good money for it. But instead we get monthly subscription apps that probably just shuffle the duplicates around to mess with us. Maybe we should all just accept that we are living in a hoarder house made of photos and move on.

Have you tried just using the search bar on your phone to find "screenshot" and mass deleting those first? I did that and ended up accidentally deleting a photo of my cat's weird sleeping position that my kid took, so now I just live with the duplicates.

My 3-year-old has taken like 400 photos of the floor and my chin, so now my gallery is just 83% floor pics and 17% cat sleeping positions I'm terrified to delete. @hollyl45 I mean I tried the search bar trick but I typed "screenshot" and it also pulled up every time I screenshot something on accident, so I ended up losing a blurry picture of my dog's nose I didn't even know existed. Idk maybe I'm just not tech savvy enough for this stuff, but honestly I'd rather keep the duplicates than risk losing another 23 photos of our vacuum cleaner.
