Has anyone else noticed people over-salting everything these days?

I went to a potluck last week and THREE different dishes were basically salt licks. I get that you need salt for flavor, but I swear people are just dumping it in without tasting first. My grandma used to say "salt is a helper not a star" and she was right. She would add a pinch at a time and taste as she went, took her 45 minutes to make a pot of chili but it came out perfect. Now everyone acts like they are on a cooking show and just throws salt in from a foot above the pot. How do you keep salt levels right without ruining dinner?

Were any of those dishes using a flavored salt like garlic salt or Lawry's? In my experience that's where people really get into trouble because they don't account for the extra sodium and it just doubles down on the salty taste. I've also noticed folks using kosher salt in a shaker instead of pinching it, kosher salt flakes are way bigger and you end up with way more than a teaspoon if you just shake it on like table salt.

Has anyone considered that maybe the problem isn't the flavored salt but just using too much of it in general? I've been using Lawry's for years and it works fine as long as you taste as you go. The whole kosher salt in a shaker thing, sure, you might get bigger flakes, but if you're paying attention to how it lands on the food, you can adjust. I think people blame the salt or the shaker when really they should blame themselves for not learning how to season properly.
