The night I realized I was overfilling my slow cooker for 5 years

I always wondered why my pot roasts came out watery and bland. Last Tuesday I was making a beef stew and crammed in 6 pounds of meat plus veggies like usual. My neighbor popped over and saw my slow cooker filled to the brim and said 'you know that's supposed to be half full right?' I looked it up and she was totally right. Now I only fill it halfway and actually sear the meat first. It's a game changer for Sunday dinners. Anyone else grow up thinking more ingredients always meant better flavor?

Wait, is this Really a universal rule though? I've made perfectly good stews with a mostly full slow cooker for years and never had watery results. Maybe your neighbor has a point about not packing it to the absolute brim, but half full sounds like a waste of space and time to me. I think people get too caught up in these strict cooking rules when real life is all about tweaking things to work for YOU. Searing meat is definitely a solid move though, I'll give you that one.

@jordan903 do you think your slow cooker brand matters at all for that?

Funny how we complicate simple things until someone points it out.
