Took me 8 months to realize I was overloading my slow cooker

I always threw everything in at once and wondered why my stews tasted flat. Then a friend told me to layer ingredients by cook time, with root veggies on the bottom and meat on top. Tried it last Wednesday with a chuck roast and finally got that rich flavor I was chasing. The carrots and potatoes came out soft but not mushy, and the beef shredded perfectly after 7 hours. Made me feel dumb for ignoring the manual that said the same thing. Has anyone else had a similar aha moment with their slow cooker?

Wait, do you really find that much of a difference? I've been doing the dump and go method for years and my stuff comes out fine. Maybe I just don't have a refined enough palate for it.

Buddy of mine swore by dump and go until he burned chili so bad it set off the fire alarm three houses down.
