Finally ditched my cheap utility knife for a retractable one with a carbide blade

I used to just grab whatever box cutter was lying around the warehouse, usually the orange ones from Harbor Freight. Switched to a Lenox Gold retractable with carbide tips after I cut through my third pair of gloves last month. Thing slices through drywall and carpet like butter, and the blade lasts about 5 times longer. Anyone else make the switch and notice a big difference in how clean your cuts come out?

@gibson.sarah you're totally right that sharp blades do all the heavy lifting, but man, using a crappy knife made me scared to even cut straight. I had the same problem with the blade slipping right through my work gloves, and that Lenox Gold retractable is a lifesaver compared to the junky orange ones. Plus the cleaner cuts make me feel like I actually know what I'm doing, even if I'm just faking it like susanm56.

Honestly I feel seen. Ngl the cheap ones are straight up dangerous when the blade slips and you end up slicing your own thumb instead of the box. Tbh the cleaner cuts make me feel like I actually know what I'm doing now even though I definitely still don't.

Susan, you're right that the cheap ones are just asking for trouble, but don't give yourself too much credit on the cleaner cuts just yet. A sharp blade does most of the work for you, so it's the tool not the technique that's making you look good.
